Teachings from his books Reverse Meditation, and I’m Mindful, Now What?
Reverse meditations offer a radical way to bring the difficulties of life onto the path—and show you how to find freedom in the most unwanted experiences, including illness and death. These practices are the opposite of what we consider to be meditation, and they vastly expand our sense of the meditative path.
Turn traditional understanding of meditation inside out and upside down, and revolutionize your spiritual practice by learning reverse meditations in this five-week series. Obstacles that previously obstructed your path can transform into opportunities. By putting your meditation “into reverse,” you’ll actually find yourself moving forward.
Schedule
JUNE 1
Reverse Meditations: Some Preliminaries
You’ll begin your meditative journey by refining your understanding of the baseline practice of mindfulness and metta (the practice of lovingkindness), and learn the power of the “one-breath meditation.” Learn the history behind Reverse Meditations and why these meditations are called “reverse.”
JUNE 8
Mindfulness to Meet the Modern World
Explore the central preparatory practice of open awareness and an introduction to the core principles of contraction and expansion—the “combustion cycle” of reverse meditation. You’ll learn the difference between pain and suffering, and how the Reverse Meditations deconstruct both.
JUNE 15
Nonreferential Meditation: An Introduction to Open Awareness
Discover the four stages of reverse meditation, with an emphasis on the first two stages of observing and being with the unwanted experience. You’ll learn the “anti-complaint meditation,” open up to the power of inner silence, and realize the importance of short meditation sessions.
JUNE 22
Reverse Meditation in Four Steps
This session explores the last two of the four stages of reverse meditation, examining and uniting, emphasizing the third stage and its relationship to analytic meditation. You will learn how to feel things more, but have them hurt you less, by changing the way you relate to difficult feelings.
JUNE 29
Reverse Meditation in Daily Life
Take a deep dive into the final stage of unification and discover how to develop a spiritual relationship to unwanted experiences. You’ll learn how to relate to pain and suffering in a nondual way, transforming material obstacles into spiritual opportunities.
More About the Class
Meditation can be so much more than 20 minutes of tranquility each day. As expert teacher Andrew Holecek says: “With some initial practice, you’ll bring a mind that is more present, open, sensitive, kind, and aware into every facet of life. Wherever you go, your wondrous mind will go with you.”
Reverse Meditation offers boundary-breaking practices to transform meditation from a resource for keeping us comfortable into a path of fully awakened living. With his signature accessibility and depth, Holecek shares insights into where we get stuck, practices for opening to fearless engagement with life, and much more.
Over the five live Saturday Community Meditation classes, you will practice Reverse Meditation, Mindfulness, and Open Awareness, and learn how to move beyond mindfulness to meet the modern world.
